Recently a client of mine wanted to hire an administrator. We had several candidates booked for interviews, but two cancelled because they had taken another job by the time of the interview. Both these candidates' CVs had been online for only a week, and both were nearly sixty.

By nature I am a “hurry up” person; I like to crack on with things and used to find people who are detail-oriented and cautious to be challenging to work with. Sarah, a former colleague, was a different personality type: skilled at writing processes, she was great at taking time to review things and to think carefully before taking action. She taught me the value of not letting my emotional response to a situation be my only response.

Last Friday I wanted to get away from my laptop for a while, so I printed off some CVs and started calling candidates. I had some lovely conversations and ended the day buzzing, knowing that I’d made a positive impact to my candidates’ days, as they had to mine. How lucky I am to be able to feel that way after a long time in the job.
